Knotting, Netting, Connecting

Our project, Knotting, Netting, Connecting, is a community-engaged art project that brings to the fore one of the oldest human technologies, the knot and turns it into a visual metaphor for how a community is built. It will take place at Good Sport Gallery (402 ½ Richmond St, London) from July 20 - August 6, 2022.
We invite you to daily drop-in workshops to learn various knot construction techniques and tying methods. You can teach us too to tying methods you know. We will highlight knots from a variety of trades: sailing, fishing, mountaineering, agricultural work, embroidery (such as the traditional Japanese embroidery technique Bunka) and so on. It is an opportunity not only to learn new skills but also to engage with the cultural history of knots and their role in human evolution. As tying methods can range from simple to increasingly complex, everyone can find the ones they can master and be able to contribute to a large-scale collaborative soft sculpture built with knots created by many people.
We will use repurposed everyday materials, end-of-roll ribbons, yarns, discarded computer cables, tired climbing ropes, broken twines, rubber bands, grocery nets etc., any materials we can lay a hand on. You can also bring materials from your home that you don't need anymore.

We will collectively produce a large-scale knotted soft sculpture that fills the gallery space and demonstrates visual and material diversity, taking an organic shape born from the labour and unique ideas of many people. Each knot represents a unique contribution, a unique way of perceiving the place of the knot in the whole. We envision that the resulting soft sculpture serves as a metaphor for how communities are formed, relationships built, and contributions appreciated.

All events and workshops are FREE and suitable for all ages and abilities.
