Michelle Fleming

Michelle Fleming is an interdisciplinary artist and metalsmith based in London, Ontario. Michelle creates art that focuses on expression of culture through hair; whether through the means of texture, material, or the creation of an immersive experience. She aims to encourage conversation of the parallels within an individual's personal aesthetic, ritual, identity and experiences.

Michelle Fleming was born in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, Jamaica, and moved to Canada at a young age. She completed a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design with a minor in Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing as well as a BA with a Major in Art History. Her art explores hair and the various ways being biracial has influenced the way she views herself and how others see her. She began working with synthetic hair to create sculptural pieces that explore the way hair can affect a person's standing and reputation in society.
