Julien Darling-Funk
Julien Darling-Funk is an interdisciplinary artist living in London, Ontario, on the traditional land of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, LÅ«naapéewak, and Attawandaron peoples. His work explores how technology shapes our bodies, minds, and shared experiences. Julien had his first solo exhibition in London in 2019 at B13, titled Making This Digital Reality Physical, and is the 2019 recipient of the Cory Mcmanaman Art Award.

Julien is fascinated by how tools like computers, phone lines, and networks influence our sense of self. If these technologies turn us into modern day cyborgs, how do these tools shift our sense of individuality and community? His installations examine the relationship between humans and machines, reflecting on the feelings of isolation, interconnectedness, anxiety, and confusion that often come with our digital world. By combining traditional media like sculpture, drawing, and photography with sensors, motors, and computer programs, Julien creates interactive ‘set-pieces’ that invite viewers to think about our place in a technology-driven society. His work envisions an alternative, more physical way of engaging with the world and one another amid the often-absurd nature of modern life.
